November saw ASH’s very first Members’ Monthly Social! If you missed it, don’t worry, we’re hosting the next one on December 9 from 7 to 9 pm at the Working Title Kitchen on Laurier Street East. Join ASH board members and fellow Sandy Hill residents for a fun evening of chatting. Whether you’re a long-time member or considering joining for the first time, we look forward to seeing you there.

2. Request for input: Priority snow removal on public paths

Winter snow has been slow in showing up this year, but we know it will happen eventually! Have you noticed a path that needs priority attention this winter? ASH is preparing a priority list to send to Councilor Plante’s office. Post a comment or send an email to info@ash-acs.ca.

As a member, you gain the right to vote in ASH elections, access to board meetings, and you can attend member-exclusive events. Action Sandy Hill counts on the support of general members so that we can continue working on behalf of our community. The City’s 2025 draft budget was tabled at Council on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, and will be considered for adoption by Council on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Our Councillor, Stephanie Plant, invites you to submit your budget ideas. You can email your thoughts to stephanie.plante@ottawa.ca from now until December 10th.

3.  Proposed Application for 214 Somerset St E

The City of Ottawa has received a Zoning By-law application (the application) to construct a four-storey low-rise apartment building with 1,235 square metres gross floor area, containing 23 one-bedroom supportive housing units. The application will be considered at the December 4 Planning and Housing Committee (PHC) hearing. PHC members will make a recommendation to Council. Comments on this application can be sent to this Committee for their consideration.

Did you know that for several years during World War 2, Canada’s first spy agency was located beside Laurier House in a grand mansion that no longer exists? Innocuously named the Examination Unit, it focused on decrypting Japanese and Vichy France radio traffic and traded that intelligence with our British and American allies. This December, Musica Viva Singers have created a holiday feast for the ears entitled ‘Cakes and Ale’.  We’re offering up a five-course holiday concert. On the menu are seasonal selections featuring festive food and drink — wassail and wine; chestnuts and cherries; bannock bread, boar’s head, tourtière, soul cakes and more. The music is mostly from the English, Scottish, Irish, and French Canadian folksong traditions, along with a few contemporary choral works, and ranges from rollicking to sublime.

The concert will be held on Monday December 9th, at 7:30 p.m. at Centretown United Church, 507 Bank Street (accessible via ramp).

Tickets: $25 General Admission, $15 Low-Income, $70 Family Pass (up to 2 adults and 4 kids). All three ticket types will be available either from choir members or through the MVS website.

And as a special treat, Musica Viva Singers, Atlantic Voices and the Cumberland Community Singers will be joining forces on Tuesday December 10, 7.30 p.m. at Orleans United Church for a special fundraiser concert in support of local food banks.

3. Sandy Hill Winter Carnival – January 26, 2025 – SAVE THE DATE!

The planning is underway for the Sandy Hill Winter Carnival which will be held on January 26, 2025 at the Sandy Hill Community Centre. There will be fun-filled family activities from 3 pm to 5 pm followed by a community dinner from 5 pm to 6 pm.
