“Adàwe Crossing” Footbridge Opens

The new footbridge over the Rideau River at Strathcona Park  opened on Friday, December 4, 2015 with Mayor Watson, Councillors Fleury and Nussbaum in attendance.  See the Ottawa Citizen article and video.  Sandy Hill and Overbrook people held a Lantern Gathering on the bridge the same evening.

The footbridge has been officially named the Adàwe Crossing (Passerelle Adàwe). Adàwe is an Algonquin term meaning “to trade”.

Historically, temporary wooden bridges had been rebuilt every summer at this point on the river for many years.  See the image below.
