Request for input: Priority snow removal on public paths

Winter snow has been slow in showing up this year, but we know it will happen eventually! Have you noticed a path that needs priority attention this winter? ASH is preparing a priority list to send to Councilor Plante’s office. Post a comment or send an email to info@ash-acs.ca.

Over the past few years, I have noted some key pathways that if maintained during the season, would greatly improve the winter cycling network.

    1. The bi-directional bike path along Waller adjacent to the Laurier bus station at Demarais. The confederation pathway is maintained so this small addition would extend that corridor further north.

    2. The upper section of pathway running through Riverain park. Currently, the path is maintained from Adawe to McArther, so extending this pathway to the Montreal ped/bike crossing would keep riders off North River, which can be dangerous.

    3. Ensuring the St Patrick bridge bike lanes are cleared to the left of the bike lane. This would create a snowbank which could act as protection for the bike lane in the absence of flex posts as well as prevent high speed traffic from spraying the sidewalk with slush.

    4. Maintaining the Stanley Park pathway through the entire park, from Stanley Ave to Union St. Currently, the path is only maintained to the utilities shed in the middle of the park. Maintaining all the networks would make the park more accessible as it is still heavily used during the winter.

    5. Clearing the pathway through Bordeleau Park from Union St to the bend at Cathcart/Rose St. Currently, the path is maintained from Union St to the King Edward sidewalk, but this is not suitable for biking. Also, the park is still well used in the winter and a path through the park would make it easier to use for all.

A community member emailed to say: “Osgoode street should be a priority for snow clearing due to lots of school children walking to school, not to mention older students walking to the University. Usually Osgoode gets plowed later in the morning or afternoon after a big storm. It would need to be done much earlier.”
