Correspondence from MPP Regarding University of Ottawa’s Student Residences

A follow-up message from Madeleine Meilleur’s Office regarding the issue of insufficient on-campus student residences for University of Ottawa students:

From: McLellan Michael J.

To: Christopher Collmorgen
Subject: ASH – AGM student residences

As promised, at the ASH AGM last week, Mme. Meilleur has followed up on the concerns expressed about student residences at U of O.

We have followed up with the ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (TCU), the ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the ministry of Infrastructure in order to determine if there is funding for the building student residences. The result of our search is to confirm that the government funds the construction of teaching-learning spaces (faculties) and does not fund student residences. Universities are responsible for the funding and the building of their student residences.

Mme. Meilleur also spoke at length with Mark Joyal, vice rector resources at U of O. He confirmed:

  • that as part of their strategic and long term planning process that there are plans to build student housing;
  • their intent to consult with the community for input into the planning and development of student residences.

Mr. Joyal plans attend the Town and Gown meeting to be held on Thursday, June 27th, 2013 in order to share and discuss these plans with the group.

Please continue to keep us informed about how this is progressing.

Respectfully,

Michael McLellan
